Bleak Yet Predictable Outcome

Ava walked down the path with her head held high. She just finished doing the most important exam in her life yet—her college entrance exam. The confidence brimming in her caused a smile to surface on her face. She really thinks she’s going to get a high score.

Which is good considering she’ll need a scholarship to even attend university. Her family doesn’t have that kind of money.

Ava glanced to the side, watching the little kids play soccer on the field. She’s been cramming and praying to have good results today. Even though her scores aren’t out yet, she’s already celebrating inside.

Ava felt a bit parched after seeing an ice cream vendor pass by. Running after it, Ava pulled out her lunch money for today. Well, it’s not really ‘lunch money’ since she brings lunch from home; it's more like her snack money.

Finding an empty bench beside the field, Ava sat down and opened her phone while taking a bite of the ice cream. Since it’s almost certain that she’ll get a good enough score to go to her dream university, she just needs to find a place to rent nearby. She can’t afford anything too expensive.

Scrolling through the multiple websites full of empty rooms, Ava found a cheap house for rent. It’s not exactly what she’s looking for considering that rented rooms are usually cheaper than rented houses, but this house is cheap and can house two people. As long as she can get roommates, that'll be the cheapest place she could get.

She opened her phone and dialed her friend's number. While waiting for her to pick up, Ava stood up and threw away the ice cream stick, grabbing her backpack to resume her journey home.

Only after Ava was halfway home did her friend pick up.

"Sorry babe, my mom wouldn’t let go of me; she kept asking about how the exam went.”

Ava laughed, “Being curious is normal, Ly. Well, anyway. Do you still plan on going to the same university?”

Without hesitation, the other side of the phone replied, “Hell, yeah! We promised to go to uni together, didn’t we?”

Humming in reply, Ava switched her hands holding the phone, “I was wondering if you wanted to rent a house together? It’ll be way cheaper, and we wouldn’t have to share a bathroom and kitchen with strangers.”

“Of course I want to! Lemme tell my parents first, I’ll call you later.” The phone went silent with a beep. Ava smiled at the thought of her friend who’s probably begging her parents right now.

Ava saw her home and hurriedly ran towards it. She can’t wait to tell her parents how her exams went.

“-ell, do something about it!” Her mom’s scream caught her off guard, Ava stopped in her tracks, debating whether to just go in and stop them or just go away for now. But her dad’s words caused her to instead sit by the door, eavesdropping on them.

“You think I don’t want the best for Ava?! Why don’t you try working? You want to send her to university, but you know I can’t, yet you just blame me instead of getting a job!”

The sound of her mom screaming could be heard, “Why don’t YOU get a real job?! Just stop this ‘business’ thing you’re doing! It’s not making any money, and we’re already behind on rent as it is! Do you want your daughter to work instead of going to university? Huh? So that you can continue doing your so-called ‘business’?!”

Ava stood up; she really couldn’t bear to continue hearing them argue, yet she was afraid of going inside. What if they really do decide to let her work instead? She already put so much effort into doing the exams. She thought her family could hang on until she finished university; she’s even already planned for a part-time job, not expecting her family to spend any money on her education.

She’s also already told them this. Maybe her father just gave up, waiting for her to work for the family instead. Ava choked up as she ran towards god-knows-where. She doesn’t care; she just wants to get out of there.

Should she sacrifice her future for her family? She really doesn’t want to, she wants to be happy. Even if she’s willing, she’s scared that her parents will get lazier after she starts working and that they’ll depend on her for more money. She’s still young, and she does want to support her parents, but she needs to grow until she can earn a decent amount of money first. If she works now, she’s probably going to end up with a job that makes her miserable and doesn’t even pay well.

Ava looked at her phone screen, which was displaying the house that she wanted to rent. Should she just go and forget about her family’s suffering? Should she sacrifice herself? Should she…..?

Forgotten Trail

 Read/Z's Short Scenes/Forgotten Trail

Table of Contents

Beautiful sunshine lays its grace upon the abundance of greens, with dots of color littered around as flowers and animals.

Wide, even grounds lay surrounded by houses, little kids having fun and creating mischief on them. The adults sat on their doorsteps, each holding something in their hands. Some articles of clothing, others woodwork—not one is idle.

A girl just past teenagehood is among them, with an old shirt in her hand. She hummed a familiar tune, her hands following the fast-paced rhythm, a testament to her mending skills.

"What'cha humming, Maggie?" A youth's voice interrupted her focus, causing her to mark her finger in error. Bright red blood seeped into the shirt, causing Maggie to run hastily towards the river.

"Aww, dammit! My favorite shirt!" Even though her voice was filled with frustration, her hands carefully rubbed the fabric, paying attention to avoid using her bleeding finger.

A rustling sound of someone running caught her attention. Turning her head to the side, she saw Jil, the boy who caused all this.

"Maggie! Are you alright? Look at you, take care of your wound first at least." He squatted down beside her and grabbed the shirt from her hands. But her tightened grip prevented him from doing so.

"I'll wash it for you, go treat your wound first." Even if Jil isn't drop-dead gorgeous, his gin lights up his whole face, rarely did anyone refuse him when he presented himself like this.

But Maggie seems immune to it, as she tugged the shirt right out of his hands. Jil didn’t dare to put too much strength as he knew Maggie regarded this shirt as more precious than herself.

Silence surrounded them since they went to the river the children's sounds were far away, Jil can’t stand this silence, “Hey, I didn’t mean anythin-”

“Just go… Jil, I want to be alone.” Her first words caused Jil to flinch at the unusual coldness, Maggie changed her tone since she feels like it wasn’t appropriate to act like that because of a piece of clothing.

Jil scratched his head, debating over staying here and comforting her, or leaving as she requested.

A few minutes paused yet Jil stayed. Maggie started shaking, her hands gripping the shirt tighter and tighter.

Jil was dumbfounded. What is he supposed to do now? He hesitated for a moment, but ultimately wrapped his hands around her form, pulling her in.

Wetness pooled on his collarbone. The shaking didn’t stop.

The rubbing hand on her back eased her hiccups, a hesitant voice whispered to the wind, as if still not yet decided whether the speaker wanted to be heard or not, but wanting to let it out.

“This is wrong, why is it wrong…”

Jil was confused, but he didn’t ask, just listened. After confirming that she wasn’t going to continue, he moved his hand and rubbed her head.

“Whatever it is, whether you want to tell me or not, I’m here for you, Maggie.”

Maggie looked up at him, tear tracks still visible on her cheeks. Just as she was about to respond, the sounds of water splashing caught their attention.

Maggie hastily put distance between herself and Jil. The position they were in would cause rumors if others saw them.

The sounds of water splashing got closer and closer until they saw the form of a person swimming near them.

It seems like he was chasing something. He stopped suddenly after getting close enough for them to see him. He also seemed to sense their presence, as he lifted his head and rubbed the water from his face as he scanned their direction.

With a plop, Maggie’s shirt fell off her grasp and was immediately swept away by the current. The man saw this. He swam towards it, then slowly approached them, reaching out his hand to offer the shirt back.

But Maggie didn’t move, and neither did he. Their gaze stopped at each other.

Self-driving carriages, sky-high structures, people squished into boxes. A plethora of images passed through their minds. None of it makes sense, yet one thing sticks out to both of them.

The first half of these images contain the person in front of them.

The man stayed silent, too shocked to utter a word. But one thing came out of Maggie’s mouth that caused his eyes to clear.

“Trev..?”

NDHSD Chapter 8

 Read/NDHSD/Chapter 8

Table of Contents

◎ Happy Day 8: Hoarding Heaven - Light Industrial Park ◎

The door installation master worked quickly, and when Qin Shiwen returned from work, she noticed that the neighboring door had already been transformed.

Jiang Muyun had just finished tidying up a pile of unusable plastic bags and was preparing to go downstairs to throw them away when she bumped into Qin Shiwen.

Qin Shiwen looked at the rather unattractive large iron door and couldn't help but pat Jiang Muyun's head. "Cub, what happened to your door?"

Jiang Muyun immediately got into character and replied, "Lately, I've been feeling a bit insecure, and when I saw this door on the street yesterday, I impulsively bought it."

In the evening, Qin Shiwen's yellow croaker dish had no trace of spiciness for herself.

Along with the expensive-looking dishes on the table, everything was piled up in front of Jiang Muyun.

While transferring the takeout dishes to plates, they were arranged fancifully, and she could tell that Qin Shiwen's love for her was evident.

Jiang Muyun enjoyed her meal and the loving gaze of Qin Shiwen, savoring every delicious bite. In the end, she walked home with a satisfied and content stomach.

In the evening, Jiang Muyun placed orders and made payments for the bulk purchases she needed online. She then took a few walks downstairs, strolling around for several rounds. She spent some time watching the elderly men play chess near the fitness equipment. Finally, she felt that she had digested most of the food.

Jiang Muyun made up her mind. She decided to go back and purchase some single-player video games as well as some tabletop games like Legends of the Three Kingdoms. She wanted to cherish every moment when humans still had the energy and time to seek entertainment.

The next day, Jiang Muyun deliberately set an alarm clock and woke up early.

She dressed in the most ordinary white T-shirt, tied her hair up in a high ponytail, and wore glasses and a mask. Driving her battle-damaged van, she headed towards the southern suburbs of the city.

This area is the light industrial park of South City, ranging from garment factories to home appliance factories. It offers a wide variety of everyday items, catering to all needs.

With her current inventory, she had enough supplies to ensure she wouldn't go hungry. Now it was time for her to focus on her health.

Once she finished purchasing the essential items, the remaining funds would be allocated for hoarding fried chicken, beverages, and crawfish.

The first place Jiang Muyun went was the newly opened plastic processing factory mentioned by the restaurant owner yesterday.

Jiang Muyun needed a large quantity of plastic boxes of various sizes that met food packaging standards.

From small food containers for portioning cooked food in the future to large water storage tanks she planned to use, Jiang Muyun required a wide range of plastic boxes.

She also needed various thicknesses of plastic film, different sizes of plastic bags, and disposable products such as gloves.

With all these different items combined, the quantity would be in tons.

The amount she needs is actually embarrassing.

In the eyes of large factories, her order was considered small, so she would have to follow the proper procedures and wait in line like everyone else. The waiting time would depend.

However, small factories might not have such a wide variety of products available.

Jiang Muyun could either split the purchase into several batches or visit each factory one by one to see if they had any products available for quick delivery.

But this new factory is different.

The scale of the factory is not small, but since it is newly opened, the order volume is not considered large.

After explaining her intentions, the factory manager promptly accepted the order and assured her that the shipment could be made within a week.

With the most troublesome part resolved, Jiang Muyun started visiting each factory one by one.

First was the garment factory.

According to Jiang Muyun's method of purchase and requirements, garment factories usually sell by weight rather than by piece, so Jiang Muyun had to estimate her purchases accordingly.

Nearly ten thousand sets of underwear, along with the disposable underwear she planned to buy later, would be enough for her to wear for a lifetime.

Jiang Muyun also ordered around ten thousand sets of soft and breathable long-sleeved shirts and loose trousers.

It's not that she doesn't want to buy short-sleeved clothes, but after the apocalypse, there are hardly any days with normal weather.

High temperatures not only mean scorching heat but also intense sunlight and countless mosquitoes.

Jiang Muyun was once pushed down onto the concrete pavement under the scorching sunlight during the first occurrence of high temperatures.

In a matter of seconds, the outside of her right arm was scalded.

After waiting eagerly for a summer with rain, people were almost driven to the brink of collapse by the overwhelming swarm of mosquitoes.

She decided to play it safe and simply buy long-sleeved shirts and pants.

Jiang Muyun's request was also quite simple: she wanted half of the tops to be in light colors and the other half in dark colors.

All the pants should be dark.

The salesperson who attended to Jiang Muyun nodded and also expressed that they could process the order quickly.

Perhaps noticing that Jiang Muyun didn't have specific color preferences for the clothes, the salesperson tentatively asked, "We have a batch of customized pants in the wrong color from our factory. I can assure you that they are not defective products. Would you be interested in taking a look? We can give it to you at cost."

Jiang Muyun is overjoyed.

Of course she's interested!

The salesman immediately leads Jiang Muyun to the warehouse with a smile.

After seeing the samples, Jiang Muyun understood why the manufacturer wanted to sell them at a lower price.

This batch of pants consists of more than eight thousand pieces, all in a dark khaki color.

The pants all have elastic waistbands and elastic cuffs, and the style is unisex. They are available in sizes ranging from XS to XXL.

There is a logo printed on the upper part of the pants, which is also in khaki and blends almost seamlessly with the pants. No wonder people didn't want them.

The quality of these pants is better than what Jiang Muyun originally planned to order, and the length of the legs is longer than the regular sizes.

Jiang Muyun is considered tall among women, with a height of 174 centimeters. Most of the sizes available for this style of pants would fit her.

Even if the XS and S sizes are too short, she can always cut the pants legs and wear them as shorts when at home.

After inquiring about the price, Jiang Muyun immediately made the decision to take all of them.

The salesman was overjoyed.

Before he could even enjoy his happiness for three seconds, Jiang Muyun decided to remove the long pants from her order, stating that this batch would be sufficient.

The salesman's smile froze on his face.

But as Jiang Muyun packed up the factory's winter clothing inventory, the salesman's smile became lively again.

After the apocalypse, there was hardly any spring or autumn season, and Jiang Muyun had no intention of preparing clothing specifically for those seasons.

Jiang Muyun remembered that in the post-apocalyptic world, the climate was characterized by years of drought followed by years of flooding, as well as alternating periods of cold and hot weather. There seemed to be no normal season at all.

Summer shirts needed to be purchased in large quantities because during the dry season, there was no water for washing, and during the rainy season, clothes couldn't dry properly. People had to rely on collecting rainwater during the wet season and then using that water for washing and drying clothes during the dry season.

As for the winter season, with an average temperature of minus sixty to seventy degrees, cotton jackets and sweaters were just the basics. For Jiang Muyun, who couldn't afford fur coats, her main focus for cold protection was on extreme cold weather clothing.

When Jiang Muyun was selecting her purchases, she noticed some loungewear displayed nearby.

Although she knew that these clothes were not very practical, as she touched their soft texture, she shamefully felt tempted.

Just buy a few sets!

Can't she wear them at home during the early stages of the apocalypse?

Fortunately, Jiang Muyun's order quantity was not small. When she mentioned that she wanted to buy a few sets of home clothes separately, the salesperson simply allowed her to choose from the sample pile, and the chosen ones were packed and delivered to her.

Jiang Muyun felt like she had made a profit again.

In a good mood, Jiang Muyun went to the next store.

Next to the garment factory is a textile factory.

Jiang Muyun bought a considerable amount of cotton towels, bed sheets, duvet covers, and some unprocessed blackout fabric.

The quantity she requested was small, so the factory refused to deliver the goods.

Fortunately, Jiang Muyun came by car. Her van may be old and worn out, but it has a large storage capacity.

Since Jiang Muyun only wanted solid colors and wasn't picky about patterns, the textile factory quickly sorted the goods for her on the spot and let her load them into her van and take them away.

The middle-aged female worker who helped Jiang Muyun sort the goods mentioned that she had been working in the factory for nearly twenty years.

Jiang Muyun's interest immediately peaked.

After loading the bed sheets and duvet covers into her vehicle, Jiang Muyun successfully obtained the contact numbers of some employees from small-scale bedding factories, hat factories, and shoe factories from the middle-aged female worker.

The middle-aged female worker expressed that if Jiang Muyun mentioned her name, her friends would allow Jiang Muyun to purchase goods at internal prices.

Of course, Jiang Muyun wouldn't simply believe everything others say.

She first went to other factories to get a general idea of the prices and then dialed the phone number given by the middle-aged female worker.

After inquiring from both ends, Jiang Muyun finally understood what the "internal price" was all about.

In fact, the so-called "internal price" is essentially special products from private small factories, created to encourage employees to promote and bring customers to the factories on their own initiative.

The price offered through the "internal price" is slightly higher than what would be offered to major clients. However, since Jiang Muyun's quantity is small, the price is still cheaper than if she were to individually place orders elsewhere.

The employees who introduce customers to the factory can receive additional bonuses. This not only helps to build good relationships with the employees but also allows the factory to accumulate small amounts of income over time.

Jiang Muyun happily placed an order for fifty 10-catties thick cotton quilts and mattresses, as well as one hundred sun hats.

The bedding factory agreed to deliver the goods, but Jiang Muyun would need to pick up the sun hats herself.

As for shoes, Jiang Muyun had higher quality requirements, and small factories might not have exactly what she wanted. So she decided to try her luck by visiting the shoe factory herself.

        Chapter 35 Borrowing a Boat

Ye Yaodong helplessly looked at the old lady and said, "Grandma, I've grown up. I'm not a child anymore. Next time, please don't steal eggs. If my mother finds out, she will scold me so much that she will strip off my skin!"

"It's okay, if you don't tell her, she won't know. Go out and play for a while, eat them and then come back."

Alas, in the eyes of the old lady, he is still a child!

"Go on, go, go play, don't stand in the doorway."

Under her urging, he could only walk out. Originally, he had planned to go and see Ah Guang. Now, he felt a sense of urgency in his heart.

He felt an urgent desire to make money, wanting to buy dentures for the old lady. He wanted to fulfill his spoken words as soon as possible. Considering her age, even if she didn't fall, she didn't have many good years left.

He woke up a bit early today, and when he arrived at Ah Guang's house, he hadn't even gotten out of bed yet.

"What time is it?" Ah Guang, still holding onto his blanket, hadn't fully awakened yet, speaking in a drowsy manner.

"I left home at 6:30, so it should be around 6:40 now!"

"Huh?" Ah Guang raised his head in disbelief, opening one eye. "Are you crazy? What time is it? There's no work to be done, why did you come so early in the morning?"

"I'm telling you to wake up and pee!"

"Damn it, do you want a warm drink? Get lost!" He pulled the blanket over his head to cover himself.

Ye Yaodong grabbed a corner of the blanket and tugged on it. "Get up! The sun is already high up. With your current state, do you think you'll be able to wake up and go work at the Yujing Pier tomorrow?"

"Don't bother me, it's tomorrow's problem! Did you take some kind of aphrodisiac today? Why are you up so early?"

"Early to bed, early to rise, it's good for your health. Get up quickly and let's go borrow a boat!"

"What's the rush? It's only a few hours, and the tide won't recede until noon. Stop bothering me. If you keep bothering me, I won't go borrow the boat." Ah Guang snatched the blanket from his hands and pressed it against his body, tightly clasping his legs around it, and closed his eyes again.

"Why are you squeezing the blanket? You’re not a woman, after all."

"What does squeezing the blanket have to do with being a woman? Can't men squeeze blankets too?"

"Don't you understand this? You brat. Get up quickly, and I'll tell you once you're up."

Ah Guang, annoyed by the incessant nagging, scratched his messy hair and sat up abruptly. "Damn it, I don't want to know! Are you kidding me? Even if we borrow it now, we can't go. The tide hasn't receded yet."

"At least we would know earlier if we can borrow it or not!"

"I can't believe you. Did you take the wrong medication these past couple of days? You're so eager to go out to sea!"

"Yeah, I've gone crazy thinking about money. Since you're already awake, don't go back to sleep. Get up and let's go ask around."

Ah Guang, frustrated by his persistence, had no choice but to get up and get dressed while muttering to himself, "That’s enough. Why did I become brothers with you? Not letting me sleep, can't you just sleep peacefully with your wife at home?"

"My wife is already awake, my whole family is awake!"

"And I have to get up too?"

Ye Yaodong looked at him with a teasing smile, and put his arm around his shoulder. "We're good brothers, aren't we? Don't you have to share my worries?"

Ah Guang glanced at him sideways and took advantage of the moment when he wasn't paying attention. He suddenly opened his mouth and blew a breath directly towards him...

Ye Yaodong's pupils contracted, and his facial features instantly twisted into a tight grimace. He quickly covered his mouth and nose with his hand, taking a swift step to the side. "Holy... you're too damn much... damn it..."

"This breath of immortality can extend your life by ten years. No need to thank me!"

"You damn bastard. I'm sure I've lost twenty years of my life because of you!"

Ah Guang felt a bit smug, having "casually" avenged the early morning disturbance. He considered it a win on his part.

"Who asked you to come and disturb my sleep so early in the morning? I also have a temper when waking up, you know!"

"Damn it, this is not just a temper, it's toxic fumes, poisonous gas! It's suffocating me! F*ck! *%@&$!" Ye Yaodong cursed a few more times and then went to wait at the door.

Standing beside him, who knows if there might be any other unidentified gas released!

After waiting at the doorstep for a long time without seeing Ah Guang come out, he reluctantly went back inside. To his surprise, he found Ah Guang standing at the back door, holding up his pants and fastening his belt.

"You just finished taking a dump, huh? It took you so long. Well, perfect timing,  just in time to eat."

"Could you please add the word 'meal' to that? Just in time to eat a meal!"

He had a smile in his eyes. "It's the same thing, come and eat. It's still warm and just right for your mouth!"

"You @$&%*! I'll eat when I come back!" Ah Guang grumbled and walked out directly. How could he not know this guy? He was just annoyed by his dilly-dallying, indirectly urging him to quickly borrow the boat, and he even said such disgusting words.

Ye Yaodong sat with his legs crossed at the table, waiting. Ah Guang's aunt's house wasn't far from his own. Both families were from the same village, and it was common for people to marry within the village.

He thought to himself that since he was already up and had nothing else to do, he might as well ask early and put his mind at ease. He truly believed that there would be more opportunities on the deserted island than at the pier. The recent stroke of good luck had also gotten to his head a little bit.

He patiently waited for less than half an hour when Ah Guang returned.

"My aunt and uncle agreed to lend us the boat, but the old man at home objected. So, I suggested that we rent it from them. We'll pay them two yuan for half a day at noon, and we'll cover the fuel costs ourselves. Only then did the old man agree to lend us the boat."

For most laborers, their daily wages are not even two yuan, so renting a boat for half a day and covering the fuel costs themselves is already quite a significant expense. Giving them two yuan is actually quite generous.

"Yeah, no problem. We're brothers, so it's only fair to settle the accounts. It's reasonable for the elders to ask for payment. This one's on me; I happen to have two yuan on me." He remembered feeling the two yuan in his pocket yesterday and had thought about buying cigarettes but decided against it.

Ah Guang pushed it back directly, "Hey, why bother? It's just two yuan. I'll cover it myself, no big deal. Besides, I won a few yuan playing cards yesterday, so it works out."

"That's a different matter, it was me who asked you to borrow the boat and go out to sea, so it's only fair that I cover the expenses. Take it, it's just two yuan."

"I already gave it to them, so let it be. Take the two yuan and use it to buy diesel fuel."

"That's fine."

Indeed, it's not much money, so there's no need to keep pushing it back and forth. Take it and use it to buy diesel fuel, it's a good idea.

With one foot propped up on the stool, Ah Guang picked up his bowl and chopsticks. "Now, can I enjoy my breakfast in peace?"

"You go ahead and eat. I never said you couldn't eat. It's your own impatience," said Ye Yaodong, sitting in a nearby armchair, shaking his leg and smiling.

Ah Guang gave him a big eye roll.

"The tide should recede completely by 12 o'clock, so you go a bit earlier, around 10:30, to the dock to buy diesel. I will join you at that time and we will go together to sail the boat."

"Okay, no problem. There's nothing urgent now, so I'll go back first. If Ah Zheng and the others come later, please let them know."

"It's something that could have been done in a few minutes, and yet you had to come so early and wake me up.” Ah Guang deeply resents it, as he rarely wakes up this early unless it's something important.

"I'm just helping you practice, otherwise, how would you manage to get up when you have to work at the dock? If you find it really boring, you can go back to sleep if you want."

“Roll!"

“Okay!"
