Ava walked down the path with her head held high. She just finished doing the most important exam in her life yet—her college entrance exam. The confidence brimming in her caused a smile to surface on her face. She really thinks she’s going to get a high score.

Which is good considering she’ll need a scholarship to even attend university. Her family doesn’t have that kind of money.

Ava glanced to the side, watching the little kids play soccer on the field. She’s been cramming and praying to have good results today. Even though her scores aren’t out yet, she’s already celebrating inside.

Ava felt a bit parched after seeing an ice cream vendor pass by. Running after it, Ava pulled out her lunch money for today. Well, it’s not really ‘lunch money’ since she brings lunch from home; it's more like her snack money.

Finding an empty bench beside the field, Ava sat down and opened her phone while taking a bite of the ice cream. Since it’s almost certain that she’ll get a good enough score to go to her dream university, she just needs to find a place to rent nearby. She can’t afford anything too expensive.

Scrolling through the multiple websites full of empty rooms, Ava found a cheap house for rent. It’s not exactly what she’s looking for considering that rented rooms are usually cheaper than rented houses, but this house is cheap and can house two people. As long as she can get roommates, that'll be the cheapest place she could get.

She opened her phone and dialed her friend's number. While waiting for her to pick up, Ava stood up and threw away the ice cream stick, grabbing her backpack to resume her journey home.

Only after Ava was halfway home did her friend pick up.

"Sorry babe, my mom wouldn’t let go of me; she kept asking about how the exam went.”

Ava laughed, “Being curious is normal, Ly. Well, anyway. Do you still plan on going to the same university?”

Without hesitation, the other side of the phone replied, “Hell, yeah! We promised to go to uni together, didn’t we?”

Humming in reply, Ava switched her hands holding the phone, “I was wondering if you wanted to rent a house together? It’ll be way cheaper, and we wouldn’t have to share a bathroom and kitchen with strangers.”

“Of course I want to! Lemme tell my parents first, I’ll call you later.” The phone went silent with a beep. Ava smiled at the thought of her friend who’s probably begging her parents right now.

Ava saw her home and hurriedly ran towards it. She can’t wait to tell her parents how her exams went.

“-ell, do something about it!” Her mom’s scream caught her off guard, Ava stopped in her tracks, debating whether to just go in and stop them or just go away for now. But her dad’s words caused her to instead sit by the door, eavesdropping on them.

“You think I don’t want the best for Ava?! Why don’t you try working? You want to send her to university, but you know I can’t, yet you just blame me instead of getting a job!”

The sound of her mom screaming could be heard, “Why don’t YOU get a real job?! Just stop this ‘business’ thing you’re doing! It’s not making any money, and we’re already behind on rent as it is! Do you want your daughter to work instead of going to university? Huh? So that you can continue doing your so-called ‘business’?!”

Ava stood up; she really couldn’t bear to continue hearing them argue, yet she was afraid of going inside. What if they really do decide to let her work instead? She already put so much effort into doing the exams. She thought her family could hang on until she finished university; she’s even already planned for a part-time job, not expecting her family to spend any money on her education.

She’s also already told them this. Maybe her father just gave up, waiting for her to work for the family instead. Ava choked up as she ran towards god-knows-where. She doesn’t care; she just wants to get out of there.

Should she sacrifice her future for her family? She really doesn’t want to, she wants to be happy. Even if she’s willing, she’s scared that her parents will get lazier after she starts working and that they’ll depend on her for more money. She’s still young, and she does want to support her parents, but she needs to grow until she can earn a decent amount of money first. If she works now, she’s probably going to end up with a job that makes her miserable and doesn’t even pay well.

Ava looked at her phone screen, which was displaying the house that she wanted to rent. Should she just go and forget about her family’s suffering? Should she sacrifice herself? Should she…..?
