Chapte8 Digging for Sand Clams by the Seashore

Their home was not far from the beach, just a ten-minute walk away. However, when they reached the beach, instead of going directly onto the sandy shore, they continued walking along the coastline towards the pier.

There were also sand clams to be found beneath the sand, but they needed to search for them. The beach was vast, and not every spot had sand clams. It wasn't as simple as just digging a few times to find them.

Sand clams are a type of clam, also known as ‘flower clam’ in some regions. However, in their village, people habitually referred to them as ‘sand clams’ because they were dug out from beneath the sand on the beach.

Although they are dug out from beneath the sand on the beach, most of the sand clams do not contain sand inside. In very rare cases, there might be some sand, but even then, they can be easily cleaned by soaking them overnight before cooking.

When used in soup or added to noodles, a few sand clams can enhance the flavor and add a delightful freshness to the dish.

In the future, the clams available in the market no longer appeal to the villagers. They lack the freshness and the firm texture of the sand clams they dig by themselves from the seaside.

Moreover, the sand clams on their beach are somewhat different from the clams available in the market. The size of the sand clams varies, with some as small as a fingernail and others as large as normal clams. However, even the small ones are meaty and delicious.

There are two high tides and two low tides every day. During regular low tides, children would go and play by digging for clams. However, on the first and fifteenth day of lunar new year when there is a significant low tide, more people would gather for clam digging.

Moreover, people in their village are accustomed to digging clams outside the pier because it is only on the first and fifteenth day of the lunar new year when the tide recedes significantly, exposing the beach near the pier. Usually, whether it is during high tide or low tide, the area is filled with water.

Whenever the beach is exposed, there are many sand clams to be dug under the sand, and the reefs along the shore are also revealed. On the reefs, you can find sea melon seeds, oysters to pry open, and even spicy snails to pick up.

Rely on the mountains to eat from the mountains, rely on the sea to eat from the sea!

Living by the seaside and being diligent ensures one won't go hungry.

After reaching the pier, they slowly descended the steep slope made of rocks. By this time, the tide had receded, revealing a small stretch of sandy beach. Several women were already squatting there, digging into the sand.

Usually, it was the women and children of the families who would dig for seafood on the beach. Since getting married, Ye Yaodong hadn't come to the seaside to play. Being no longer a child, he had lost the sense of novelty towards the beach.

But since his rebirth, there seemed to be a nostalgic feeling, and his state of mind had changed. He found a renewed sense of freshness on this beach.

He walked over and took a look at the buckets beside the women from the village. "Did you find anything? Oh, there really are some. How long have you been digging?"

Everyone was focused on digging with their shovels on the surface of the beach, and no one paid any attention to him.

Is it that they are as idle as a man who spends his days leisurely? Instead of idle chatter, wouldn't it be better for them to dig a few more times?

No one paid attention to him, but Ye Yaodong wasn't bothered. He watched his son playing with sand alone on the beach and then walked back to his wife. In just a short while, she had already collected six or seven sand clams in her basin.

Hearing two more clinking sounds, indicating the discovery of two additional clams, he squatted down and said, "You're digging pretty fast."

The shovel is the most practical tool for digging clams in the sand, without a doubt!

Some people, if they can't attach the wooden handle, simply use a single shovel blade to dig instead.

Lin Xiuqing also holds a shovel blade, and without lifting her head, she says, "Practice makes perfect, and this doesn't require any special skills, just dig the sand."

Yeah, he did this a lot when he was a child. Growing up by the seaside, the most common activity for kids was digging sand.

Since he was already here, he couldn't just stand and watch. Without a shovel, he simply used his hands to dig.

On the sandy beach, there were small bubble-like holes. With a casual scoop of his hand, Ye Yaodong would find a sand clam in each scoop, and he was quite accurate at it.

Hearing the consecutive "clang" sounds in the basin, Lin Xiuqing glanced sideways. So fast?

Yaodong noticed her gaze and raised an eyebrow as he looked at her. "What's up? Do you think I'm impressive? Want me to teach you?"

Saying so, he used both hands to scoop on the surface of the beach, and there was another one!

He scooped it into the basin and added, "These things are really easy to dig. I used to dig them a lot when I was a kid."

"How do you get one every time you dig?" She was genuinely curious.

Although her parents' home was in the neighboring town, it was not near the sea. It was located inland, close to the mountains.

After marrying and moving to the seaside for several years, she had always followed her mother-in-law and sisters-in-law. She would do things the way they did. Every time they went to dig for seafood, she would join them. Everyone would use a shovel to scrape the sand, unlike him, who could scoop them out like that.

Ye Yaodong pointed at the small holes on the beach, "Do you see these? Sand clams also need to breathe. They rely on these small openings to breathe. Where there are holes, there are likely to be sand clams beneath them."

While explaining, he demonstrated by scooping out two more sand clams.

He was quite skilled at finding the holes and scooping out the sand clams.

It's because it's close to the first day of the lunar month that the beach near the pier has such good conditions for digging. The central part of the beach is not as easy to dig.

Lin Xiuqing also tried digging curiously, and sure enough!

"Then why bother with a shovel? Just dig directly with your hands!" It's tiring to dig with a shovel, and after a while, your hands will get sore.

"It's still better to use a shovel. Having tools makes it more convenient. I used my hands because I didn't have a shovel. Some sand clams are closer to the surface and can breathe without the need for small holes. But once the beach gets trampled on, you won't see the holes anymore. It's only during low tide that you can see the air bubbles."

Lin Xiuqing kept looking at him as he spoke. Over the years, except for the early days of their marriage, they rarely had normal conversations. He was always disappearing, appearing only during mealtimes or when it was time to sleep. At most, they exchanged a few words in their daily routines.

Most of the time, he appeared carefree and nonchalant. So when he suddenly spoke earnestly and seriously, even offering to teach her, it made her feel somewhat uneasy.

"What are you looking at? Dig!"

"Oh!"

After a while, more people came to dig clams. Nowadays, people are very diligent, except for Ye Yaodong.

After squatting and digging for a while, he felt his legs getting a bit numb, so he stood up, stretched his waist, and turned his neck, looking at the sea in the distance.

Digging for a while, just showing a little effort is enough. He couldn't appear too diligent.

At this moment, the tide was still receding, and many small boats were stranded near the pier due to the tide. They could only wait until the next high tide to return to the sea.

The current time is 9:30 AM. The tide is expected to fully recede by 10:30 AM, and then begin to rise again. It will reach its highest point around 4:30 PM in the afternoon and recede again around 11:30 PM at night. By around 7:00 AM in the morning, it will reach its highest point again.

Every day, the tides recede and rise approximately 50 minutes later than the previous day. Although Ye Yaodong has just been reborn today, by looking at the tide, he can already predict the timing of the tides tomorrow.

No wonder his eldest and second brothers wanted to come out and check the tides before setting sail. As it approaches the first day of the lunar month, the tides recede even further in the middle of the night. By midnight on the first day, the tide reaches its lowest point. They would probably set sail around 1-2 AM at that time, ensuring that the tide hadn't risen much.

If the tide is not sufficient, the boat cannot go out.

Chapter 7 Going to the Beach

After Father Ye left, Eldest Brother Ye and Second Brother Ye went to the pier to see the boats.

As the Lunar New Year was approaching, the tides were receding quite a bit recently. If the boats were to run aground, they wouldn't be able to set sail tonight. They wanted to go and check, move the boats a bit further out, and also buy a barrel of diesel fuel to put on the boats. They planned to take advantage of the auspicious time to go out to sea at night.

The large haul of yellow croakers they caught yesterday was truly exhilarating. They were eager to set out immediately, but it wasn't feasible. The time interval was too short, and if they went out for just a short while and returned, it would only be a waste of diesel money.

The women in the family also took their fishing nets and sat on the doorstep, starting their daily task of repairing the fishing nets.

However, today they had extra motivation. Knowing that once the houses were built, they would be able to live separately in their new homes, everyone was excited and happy.

Lin Xiuqing is also very happy. Even though her lips and teeth are still bumping, let alone among sisters-in-law, she also wants to have her own little home. As she weaves the fishing net, her hand movements become faster.

Their fishing village is called Baisha Village, which is far from the county town and requires more than an hour's walk along a mountain road. The women have to take care of their families and can’t go out to work and earn money. The only way they can earn money is by making fishing nets.

This job may not pay much, but it is convenient and can be done at home. Every woman in the seaside community knows how to weave and repair fishing nets. The men in the village often go out to do odd jobs, work on the fields, or go fishing if they own a boat. However, the latter is relatively less common.

Lin Xiuqing has been married for a few years and has also learned how to make fishing nets. After all, her husband doesn't do much work, so she has to rely on herself to save money.

Everyone had their tasks to do, and Ye Yaodong became the one doing nothing. Even the old lady was helping them thread the shuttle needles for the fishing nets.

He moved around, squatted beside his wife, picked up the fishing net she wove, and asked curiously, "How many fishing nets can you weave a day?"

Lin Xiuqing looked at him inexplicably, "About five or six. With the children crying and other tasks to do, I can't do much. The eldest sister-in-law and the second sister-in-law can do more."

"Then how much money do you earn in a day?"

"Less than one yuan, just a few cents!"

Yaodong glanced at the fishing net with disdain, pursed his lips, thinking how cheap labor is!

As he was about to say something, his second son, Ye Chengyang, approached and stuffed a piece of squash, dripping with saliva, into his mouth. Startled, he immediately sat down on the ground and quickly spit it out.

"Ugh! Yuck! Are you trying to disgust me? It's enough to eat it yourself, but you had to stuff it in my mouth."

Mother Ye glanced at him, "Your own son is being filial to you, and you're still complaining."

"Mom, if you don't mind it, I can take a piece of squash and feed you with a mouthful of saliva! Don't complain about your own son!"

"Don't be disgusting. How old are you, and how old is he? The saliva of a baby is clean."

"All day long, touching this and grabbing that, stuffing everything into their mouths. How clean can it be?" Ye Yaodong patted his bottom and stood up. Seeing his son about to step on the fishing net and cause trouble, he quickly grabbed him and pulled him aside. "Don't be naughty. If you misbehave, I'll spank you."

"Don't scare him. He's just a little child, what does he know? It's rare that you didn't go out today and stayed at home to take care of the child. Let your wife do more weaving..."

"Lixiang~ the tide is ebbing. Stop weaving the nets and let's go foraging at the seashore together..."

Mother Ye, whose real name is Chen Lixiang, is the second oldest in her family. Before she could finish her sentence, she was interrupted and looked up to see her older sister calling her.

She belongs to the category of marrying within the village. In this day and age, every household has many children, and in the entire Baisha Village with four to five hundred households, almost half of the village consists of distant relatives.

"Isn't it two days until the first day of the lunar year? Will there be anything to dig today?" Although she said that, she still inserted the shuttle needle into the fishing net and stood up.

"You'll know once we go and see. It won't take long. I heard that some people have already gone. Hurry up, I'll go and take a look first."

"Alright, sure," replied Mother Ye, then she turned to the people in the courtyard and said, "Let's collect the nets first. Bring along the ladles, tools, and buckets, and let's go and have a look."

At this time, most of them referred to it as "tao hai" (digging the sea) rather than "gan hai" (chasing the sea) when speaking.

Ye Yaodong was idle anyway, so he followed behind.

After being reborn, he hadn't had a chance to go out and see their small fishing village yet.

Lin Xiuqing held her son and looked at him curiously, feeling like something was off with him today. "Aren't you going out today?"

"Where would I go? Are you hoping I go out?"

She turned her head away. Who would be happy with a husband who was idle and playing around all day? "No, just asking casually," she replied.

"I don't feel like going out today. I want to go to the beach with you all, see if there's any catch, and it's been a while since I strolled along the shore."

It’s true that it has been a long time since he leisurely walked along the beach. In his previous life, it was only during the fishing ban or when he couldn't go out to sea that he would occasionally take his grandson to play on the beach.

Lin Xiuqing glanced at him and then looked up at the sun shining brightly overhead, did it  rise from the west today? What a rare sight!

As Ye Yaodong watched her actions, a twitch appeared at the corner of his mouth. What's wrong with going to the beach together with them to dig for treasures?

Starting over, he wanted to make an effort to work hard.

He turned his head and fell silent, marveling at the dilapidated surroundings. After forty years, he had almost forgotten what the village looked like in the 1980s. But now, as he observed, his memories were reawakened.

The path beneath his feet was made of gravel and soil, not easy to walk on. One could easily slip and end up with bloody palms and knees. Weeds grew abundantly on both sides of the road, and there was a small ditch nearby. The surroundings were filled with uniformly scattered short stone houses and some two-story brick and tile houses.

The brick and tile houses were newly built in recent years. In the past, it was popular to construct houses using stones. However, after 2020, stone houses became increasingly rare. Those that remained were often plastered with a layer of cement mortar and painted.

 "Oh~"

"Ah!"

Ye Yaodong, while looking around, didn't pay attention to his footsteps and accidentally stepped on his wife's heel. Seeing her stumble and almost fall forward, their child was almost thrown off.

He quickly reached out and pulled her, embracing her and the child in his arms.

"Are you okay?"

"What are you doing? You're not watching where you're going. It's fine if I fell, but what if the child got hurt?" Lin Xiuqing comforted the child by patting his back, still feeling a lingering fear. The child was surprisingly brave, not crying or fussing, and didn't seem scared. That brought her some relief as well.

"I'm sorry, I wasn't paying attention. This gravel road is not easy to walk on. Give the child to me, I'll carry him."

It's really unusual today, he apologizes and offers to hold the child. He’s been acting strange since this morning. Lin Xiuqing glanced at him with suspicion.

"What's up with you today?"

Ye Yaodong's heart tightened. Indeed, the person by your side knows you the best. It's better to take things slowly.

He casually replied with his hands in his pockets, no longer insisting on holding the child, "It's nothing. Just had a moment of enlightenment from my parents. Let's go."

Lin Xiuqing: "..."

"What are you looking at? Hurry and keep up, they've already gone far ahead."

"Oh, okay..."

        Chapter 6 Building a House

The old lady always took special care of what she planted, and if someone didn't listen to her, she would nag about it several times a day. But she cares more about the third child, that's why she said it like that.

She wants to collect all the corn because she wants to sell it for some money. She also wants to earn some personal savings while she's alive, so that when she passes away, she can leave some money for her grandchildren.

After tapping the burnt tobacco from his water pipe, Father Ye looked at his children and grandchildren gathered in the room. He had intended to bring up the matter he discussed with Mother Ye last night, but someone interrupted him.

"Grandma, not long after you left this morning, Eldest Uncle and Second Uncle came to ask for money!"

Filing a complaint is definitely necessary!

Complainant—Ye Huimei!

The family finally managed to earn some money, but Eldest Uncle and Second Uncle shamelessly came knocking on the door to demand a share. It's not something they can easily discuss outside, so they definitely need to tell Grandma about it!

The children in the room chimed in, "That's right, Grandma, Eldest Grandpa and Second Grandpa are so mean."

"They even slammed the table and glared at us!"

"They also scolded my father and didn't allow him to speak!"

The chattering of the children was giving him a headache, so Ye Yaodong waved his hand at them and said, "Go go go, you guys don't have anything to do here. Go play outside and don't get in the way!"

"Lalalala~"

The children stuck out their tongues, made funny faces, and ran outside to have fun. Since they had finished their food, they didn't want to stay inside and listen to the adults talk.

Before leaving, everyone didn't forget to shout to Mother Ye before leaving, "Grandma, let us know when the corn is ready!"

The old lady didn't even lift her eyelids throughout the whole process. Suddenly receiving such a large sum of money, anyone would feel envious.

The palm of the hand is flesh, and the back of the hand is also flesh. She simply said, "Don't worry about them. Each family lives their own life, and no one should be envious of others."

Father Ye nodded in response and didn't say much. He didn't really want to discuss it with the old lady in the first place to avoid troubling her. Besides, since the money was in his hands, no one could take it away.

He scanned the room, looking at his sons and daughters-in-laws, and spoke seriously, "I discussed with your mother last night, since we have money now, we plan to build houses for you brothers and then divide the family. Each household will live their own lives."

The current house they are living in was left by their grandfather. Since Eldest Uncle Ye and Second Uncle Ye got married first, their grandfather built a house for each of them after their weddings, and they moved out to start their own lives.

Because Father Ye was the youngest and got married last, the old man thought that the house would be empty after he died, so he didn't build another one for him. Instead, he built a small room next to the vegetable garden in the backyard, with an earthen stove, intending to let himself and Grandma Ye live there in their old age, and the house they live in now was left to Father Ye.

Although this house is bigger and has four rooms, it has been repaired and patched up over the years and has become quite old. Eldest Uncle Ye and Second Uncle Ye have no objections to it either.

Now the family has grown, and this house is not enough to accommodate everyone.

There are four rooms, and each of the three brothers and their families squeeze into one room. Ye Huimei, along with Ye Father and Ye Mother, sleeps in one room, with an additional small bed.

The three brothers, except for Ye Yaodong's family of four, all have five members in their families. Five people living in one room and sharing an old-fashioned frame bed shows just how crowded it is.

They have to set up a large round table for meals, and even then, the women have to stand while eating. It's not discrimination; it's mainly because there isn't enough seating. Once the children are fed and settled, the women in the family can finally sit down to eat.

Both Father Ye and Mother Ye have noticed this situation and have long wanted to separate the families so that their sons can live their own lives. However, the problem is that they don't have enough money to build separate houses. Even if they separate, they would still have to live together because they share the same kitchen and it's not feasible to divide their food and drinks. In that case, there would be no difference between being separated and staying together.

This time, they caught a lot of large yellow croakers and made a good profit, which gives them the opportunity to separate the families.

Otherwise, with such a large sum of money suddenly coming into the family, everyone's thoughts would start to wander.

Sure enough, when the eldest sister-in-law and second sister-in-law heard about the division of the family, their eyes lit up.

Ye Yaodong was momentarily stunned and then remembered that in his previous life, his father also used the money from catching large yellow croakers to build a house. However, he was always out early and back late, hanging out with friends, and he didn't care nor lend a hand.

He had been regretting that he crossed over too late and missed the opportunity with the large yellow croakers, and he hadn't thought about building a house and splitting the family. But now, listening to his father's words, it all came back to him.

Eldest Brother Ye was surprised but didn't say anything. It's normal for the tree to spread its branches.

Second Brother Ye, on the other hand, was a bit at a loss and said, "Dad, but... everything is fine as it is. Why do we need to separate... Ah!?"

Before Second Brother Ye could finish his sentence, his wife nudged his elbow. He paused for a moment, glanced at his wife, and didn't say anything further.

Ye Yaodong rolled his eyes. Among his siblings, his second brother was the most honest, and his second sister-in-law was the most shrewd. They complemented each other perfectly!

It was his second sister-in-law who disliked him the most!

It was only because his parents allowed everyone to keep the money they earned for themselves, and daily necessities such as food and drink were provided by the land and the sea, without spending money, that this family could barely stay harmonious for so long. Otherwise, there would be chaos.

The reason~

Well, of course, it's because he's holding them back.

Father Ye glanced at his second son, opened the small round tin box containing the tobacco, and started to roll the tobacco leisurely. He said, "Now that we have money, why not separate the family? Do you still want the whole family to squeeze together? Isn't it crowded enough?"

Now no one dared to say anything, afraid to spoil the mood.

Yaodong sat on a stool, crossed his legs and shook them. He watched as everyone's hearts yearned for it but didn't dare to say it. Fearlessly, he said, "Sure, Dad, we're all married now, and it's time to split up. Building new houses would provide us with more space and comfort."

"I'm afraid you'll starve to death!" Father Ye glared at him irritably.

"Ah, huh? It won't come to that, I promise. Once we separate, I'll definitely work hard and be diligent!"

"How do you define being diligent and hardworking?"

"Uh... how do Eldest Brother and Second Brother work hard? I'll just follow their lead and learn from them."

“I don’t believe you!”

Ye Yaodong: "..."

He is serious, but no one believes him...

The old lady comfortingly patted Ye Yaodong and said, "It's good to separate and live our own lives. Far smells sweet, close smells foul. In fact, we should have separated long ago."

Mother Ye sat by the stove and took the lead in continuing the conversation. "The money earned from selling large yellow croakers can be used to build the houses. It saves us from being eyed by others. If it's not enough, we can add the money earned from future fishing trips. After all, it's all for building houses for all of you. I actually wanted to talk about this while we were all having breakfast, but it got delayed until now."

After finishing her words, she turned to Father Ye and said, "You should go to the commune later and ask about buying the land, so we can quickly hire someone to build the houses."

"Mhm," Father Ye looked at his sons and daughters-in-laws and said, "We'll use this money to build the houses, and any earnings from future fishing trips will be added to it as well. Once the houses are built, we'll split up. Does anyone have any objections?"

Eldest Brother Ye shook his head and said, "Dad, you and mom can make the decision, we have no objections."

Second Brother Ye followed suit, "Dad, you decide, we have no objections either.”

The wives in the family have been nagging in their ears at night, expressing their agreement to separate and live their own lives, so they naturally have no objections.

Ye Huimei is not married yet, so she will definitely be staying with her parents. Besides, she is their daughter, so whether the family splits or not doesn't really concern her. She will just go along with whatever happens.

The decision to use the money to build a house and split the family was temporarily settled.

Father Ye took a few more puffs of his pipe before heading out.
